All parents want the best for their children and I am not an exception. One day, I was wandering in a toy department of a big supermarket and I saw all those plastic toys in front of me: mass-produced, often too noisy, too flashy – « too much of everything ». Were they the items I wanted my daughter to play with? Did they have any real educational value?

A former executive at a French bank, I had the chance to take an extended leave and devote myself to upbringing of my little daughter Charlotte. But what education I should choose for my daughter? I was a bit lost. It is not always easy to choose the type of education we want for our children, especially when we are first-time parents.

My initial reaction was to get some information concerning the subject. I scoured the Internet, magazines, read book after book… Through my readings, I discovered and adopted the principles of Montessori education. I also noticed that there were more environmentally friendly and healthy brands, even though they were not often advertised. The selection I make here is a result of my searches, readings and it includes things I particularly appreciate.

As a young and eco-friendly mum, in love with beautiful things, I spent a lot of time on websites dedicated to the child’s psychomotor development and the Internet shops with hygiene products and baby toys. And my idea was born I wanted to propose on the same platform :

  • a selection of good quality and beautiful toys, because I am convinced that giving beautiful items to children not only attracts and fixes their attention, but also allows them to perceive, understand, memorise and build their intelligence from their sensory experience.
  • a place of exchange between early childhood professionals and parents, where parents can buy toys adapted to the stage of their child’s development and where they can get some expert advice; a place, where parents share their experiences.

Do you know the Amerindian legend of the Colibri ?

One day, says the legend, there was a great fire in the forest. The terrified and bewildered animals watched helplessly the disaster. Only the little hummingbird was active: it went to fetch a few drops of water in his beak and it threw them on the fire. After a moment, the armadillo, annoyed by these ridiculous actions, said to him: « Colibri! Aren’t you crazy? You think it’s with these few drops of water that you’re going to put out the fire? » « I know what you mean, replied the hummingbird, but I am doing my job ».

This legend was told by Pierre Rabhi, the founder of the Colibris Movement, which encourages people to build a more ecological and kind society. My choice to privilege craftsmen, manufacturers and designers who use environmentally friendly and natural materials is my contribution to this movement. Products on this website are selected with care, without toxic components and with the least negative impact on the environment.

It is also with this in mind that our 100% recyclable shipping cardboard boxes are made from wood from PEFC / FSC forests. This reduces cutting down forests in large natural areas, helps to protect endangered animal and plant species. Furthermore, it helps to create reserves and values work of indigenous peoples. On the top of this, we use untreated, 100% biodegradable and compostable pine wood wool to fix the goods and fill up the empty space in the parcel. We are also conscious that the parcel delivery is energy consuming, so we reduce the CO2 emissions generated by the carrier thanks to Swiss Post’s “pro clima” option.

Our commitment to a greener society is also reflected in the logo of Nos Petits Explorateurs: a hummingbird spreading its wings.

This project is also a family story, the story of my daughter, with whom I grow every day and who teaches me to remember that life is meant to be enjoyed. It is also the story of long discussions with my husband who supports and inspires me every day. I am finishing with Oscar Wilde’s quote: « Shoot for the moon, if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.» We should cherish this idea while thinking about the education of our children, our projects, our ambitions, and our dreams…

I do hope you will appreciate this selection as much as I do; most of the products are already in the room of my little Charlotte, who has tested them with great enthusiasm!

See you soon on the website !
